More than 250,000 sheep and goats are destroyed without any Dine’ consultation in accordance with a new stock reduction policy implemented by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). In fact, the BIA agencies, when they do consult, only talk to Dine’ men despite the fact that the women, according to custom, actually own the sheep and goats. The reduction devastates Dine’ as thousands of sheep are killed and left to rot. This is an assault not only on food and livelihood, but a spiritual and cultural assault as well (Nies, 1996).
